This week, it was our pleasure to be involved in the Colin Mayer Tour in Mauritius, celebrating the life of a true sports legend. Colin Mayer inspired an entire generation of cyclists, and was tragically killed during a race in August last year. Over three days and 180 kms, hundreds of riders will pay tribute to someone who did so much for the sport and for the profile of cycling in Mauritius.
During the week, we were delighted to play host to many of the high profile figures who have travelled to join the race, including John Smit, a former Rugby World Cup winner and captain of the Springbok national team, currently CEO of the Sharks, Cyclist Announcer and Commentator Paul Valstar and Andrew McLean, a passionate Road and Off-Road Cyclist and Director of Cycle Lab.
“The race is just so important. Of course it’s about celebrating the achievements of Colin, one of the sports real great leaders, but it’s also about the future – the legacy that he left behind” says Smit. “For me, it’s a chance to turn this tragic event into a positive opportunity for cycling, and for sport in general. It’s incredible that over 100 people have come here to push themselves to the limit but also to mix and to work as a team”.
Throughout the week, the Racers Village will be near The Bay, with events taking place across our nearby restaurants and bars to celebrate the Tour.
“When you cycle, you work together as a team. Not just with the people that race with you but with those that help you prepare”, says Andrew McNeal.
Here’s to a great week celebrating the life of a great sportsman and the ability of sport to bring people together and to improve lives. We are really proud to play our part – and good luck to all the brave riders!
